50 Mile Course

In short, the 50 mile runs the traditional SOB 50K course but adds a 9.5 mile extension on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) into California (out and back for 19 miles).

From the start at the Mt. Ashland Ski Area parking lot, the course heads west to a junction with Road 40S15 (.4 miles). Descend this road to the intersection with the Pacific Crest Trail and turn west (right). The course then heads out on the PCT to the Willamette Meridian aid station. From the aid station the trail traverses a beautiful ridge with views of Mt. Shasta, the Marble mountains, and Mt. Eddy. The trail then descends nearly 1100 feet to Long John Saddle before continuing on to the Siskiyou Gap aid station. The next 3.4 miles will be a climb on dirt Road 20 to Wrangle Gap, then back to the PCT and on to the Jackson Gap aid station which is now located where the PCT crosses the Road 40S01.  Jackson Gap is where your drop bag will be should you be using one.

Leaving the Jackson Gap aid station you will continue heading west on the PCT which will be your home for the next 19 miles. From Jackson Gap at 7040 feet the trail will descend 1700 feet in the next 6.9 miles to the Wards Fork aid station. Four miles into this descent the PCT will cross Road 2025 where water will be available to top off bottles. Shortly after you will cross into California and descend into lovely Donomore Meadows. After Donomore, it’s 1.5 mile rolling descent to the the Wards Fork Gap aid station at 5300 feet. From the aid station you will continue your westerly journey on the PCT now climbing steadily in the next 2.6 miles to the turnaround near Big Rock. The trail makes one road crossing in this section, stay on the PCT. If you listen and look carefully there is a spring on the left as you are heading towards Big Rock.  Local knowledge might come in handy if it is hot.  At the turnaround, you’ll head back to Jackson Gap the same way you came. Keep in mind after you descend to Wards Fork, that it can be a tough, hot 6.9 mile climb back to Jackson Gap.  Remember, the your drop bag is still here.

Upon returning to Jackson Gap aid station, you’ll head up the road a short distance to the actual Gap. Prominent peaks at the gap include Mt. Shasta, Mt. Ashland, Preston Peak (Siskiyou Wilderness), Red Buttes, and Mt. McLoughlin and Crater Lake Rim to the north.

Leaving Jackson Gap, the course heads due north (right) on Road 20 for 2.1 miles to Wrangle Gap, where you’ll rejoin the PCT and follow the trail around Big Red Mountain to the Siskiyou Gap aid station (3.4 miles). This section has some spectacular views of the Rogue River Valley.  From Siskiyou Gap, the return is the same route as going out.
